5 WAYS SITTING IS KILLING YOU (And What You Can Do About It)

1.
Lowered Immune System
(8th Leading Cause of Death)
Prolonged sitting has been shown in numerous health studies, including those done by the American Cancer Society, to lower the immune system. It is believed that lower activity suppresses the otherwise proactive immune system. Leaving bodies more susceptible to potentially deadly sicknesses such as influenza and pneumonia.

2.

Increase Risk of Type II Diabetes

(7th Leading Cause of Death)

A 2016 study published in the journal Diabetologia reported that each extra hour our bodies spend in a sedentary position increased the odds of Type 2 diabetes by 22 percent.

3.

Heightened Risk of Heart Attacks and Cardiovascular Disease

(1st Leading Cause of Death)

Sitting is a main driving force in our obesity epidemic.  Obese Americans, for a variety of reasons, sit an average of 2.5 hours more per day. It’s not always the sitting at work that adds up, but the sitting at home after work as well. Those who sit 3 hours or more per day watching TV are 64% more likely to die from heart disease.

4.

Sitting has been linked to cancers.

(2nd Leading Cause of Death)

The result of 17-year study from the American Cancer Society reveals that spending 6 hours or more time sitting per day results in a 10% greater risk of getting cancer than spending less than 3 hours of free time sitting per day.

5.

Sitting WRONG increases risk of death FROM ANY CAUSE by up to 40%.

In a 2013 study, first published in the respected medical journal Archives of Internal Medicine, found those who sat for more than 11 hours a day were 40 percent more likely to die within 3 years.  From ANY CAUSE!  In addition, a daily routine of sitting a full workday (8 hours) resulted in an increase of 15%! While it sounds counterintuitive at first, it may make sense when looked at from a different approach of not just sitting for too long but also incorrectly and in an unsafe manner. Accident (3rd Leading Cause of Death), Chronic Pain, Depression (Suicide is 9th Leading Cause of Death) can be linked to sitting incorrectly. Weakening the core, poor posture, bad circulation, back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, tailbone pain may all be triggering factors for increased causes of death.

What Can You Do About It:
1.
Sit less hours. Find ways to break up the routine of extended sitting sessions. Short breaks. Pace while thinking. Be sure to be standing when socializing.
2.
Increase activity during non-sitting hours. While exact causes remain unclear, one theory purposes that excess insulin caused from inactivity can encourage cell growth. A similar theory purposes regular movement and activity boosts natural antioxidants that kill cell-damaging and potentially cancer-causing agents. Canadian research scientists have suggested that as many as 100,000 cases of breast and colon cancer could be prevented if everyone simply exercised more.
3.

Spend less time in front of the TV and interrupt sitting whenever you can. Insert a routine of getting up, standing and/or walking around your home during commercial breaks.
4.
