The Importance of Taking Breaks: Avoiding the Pitfalls of Prolonged Sitting

by Jacqueline Dones 10 Aug 2023

In the hustle and bustle of our busy lives, it's easy to get lost in our work, hunched over our desks for hours on end. But here's the thing: our bodies aren't built to be statues. They crave movement and respite. Let's dive into why taking breaks and avoiding prolonged sitting is more crucial than you might think.

The Reality Check: Melissa Ricks' Story

Let's start with Melissa Ricks' experience – a story that hits home for many of us. Melissa, like many others, used to believe that health issues only happened to "other people." But life has a way of humbling us. Her lower back problems crept in like an uninvited guest, and the culprit? Hours upon hours of sitting without a break.

" I always thought that it wouldn’t happen to me, that problems with physical stuff only happened to other artists, that they couldn’t possibly happen to me.
What a fool I was.
I’ve been in bed for for a couple of days now and my lower back is still very sore. The back problems started two weeks ago, and because of my horrible sleeping schedule, I can’t see a doctor immediately. I’m still trying to wake up at a normal time so I can get some X-rays done.
All I know is it’s getting worse, but my workload and clients can’t wait. I have to work. I don’t have a choice. Or maybe I’m not giving myself a choice because I’m so addicted to work.
To everyone reading this: don’t be fool like me. Please stretch, please walk around, please exercise, don’t ruin your body for your craft."

Melissa's story serves as a wake-up call – a reminder that ignoring our body's needs can lead to consequences we'd rather avoid. As she shares, "What a fool I was. I’ve been in bed for a couple of days now and my lower back is still very sore." Her words echo a lesson we should all heed: neglecting our body's needs isn't a sustainable path.

The Hazards of Prolonged Sitting: More Than Just a Stiff Back

Prolonged sitting isn't just about the discomfort of a stiff back. It's a gateway to a host of health problems – from weakened muscles and poor posture to increased risk of obesity, heart disease, and more. Our bodies thrive on movement, and sitting for extended periods starves them of what they crave.

Why Taking Breaks Matters: Refresh and Revitalize

Here's the good news – you don't need a PhD in health science to turn things around. Taking regular breaks during your workday can be a game-changer. These breaks don't have to be elaborate vacations; simple stretches and walks can do wonders.

When you take breaks, you give your muscles a chance to stretch and your body a moment to reset. It's like hitting the reset button on your energy levels. Plus, it's a great way to clear your mind and rejuvenate your focus.

Embrace the Change: Small Steps, Big Impact

Remember Melissa's plea: "Don’t be a fool like me." It's a plea we can all benefit from. Incorporating small, intentional breaks into your work routine can make a world of difference. Stand up, stretch, take a walk around your workspace – your body will thank you.

Let's honor our bodies, respect their needs, and banish the notion that we're invincible. Melissa's story reminds us that we're all human, and our bodies deserve care and consideration. Your work is important, but so is the vessel that carries you through life. It's time to break the cycle of prolonged sitting and embrace a healthier, more vibrant you.
